AI and Ethical Issues in Health
In the past few decades, the development of information technology and Artificial Intelligence (AI) has brought significant changes in various fields, including healthcare. The application of AI technology and data analytics has enabled significant advancements in disease diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. For example, AI has been used to analyze medical images with high accuracy, predict disease outbreaks based on data patterns, and optimize healthcare systems to provide more effective and efficient care.
Various ethical issues have emerged that require serious attention behind these technological advancements. The use of highly sensitive and personal health data on a global scale raises questions about privacy, data security, and individual rights. The application of AI in healthcare often faces challenges of algorithmic bias that can exacerbate inequalities in healthcare services. These challenges demand a more holistic and ethical approach to the application of AI technology and data analytics in the field of health.
This was discussed in a seminar titled "Data Ethics and AI in Global Context and Ethics of Health Wearable Devices" by the Bioethics Program of Graduate School UGM on Wednesday, May 29th, 2024, conducted online with 5 speakers.
The first speaker, Prof. Dick Willems, MD, presented on "Ethical Considerations in Data Usage in Global Health." The second speaker, Dr. Marieke Bak, discussed "Case Studies on Data Ethics in Global Health." The third speaker, Dr. Lutfan Lauzuardi, M.Kes., Ph.D, presented on "Public Health Implications of Data AI Technologies," and the fourth speaker, Marjin Eversdicjk, M.Sc, discussed "The Ethics of Wearable Technology in Healthcare."
Prof. Dick Willems mentioned that the seminar also aims to promote the implementation of technology that is not only innovative but also ethical and fair.
