PUBLIC PANEL DISCUSSION: REALIZING FREEDOM AND RESPONSIBILITY IN SOCIETY

Date: Wednesday, June 17 2009
Time: 09.00-12.00 Wib
Venue: Seminar Room, 5th floor, UGM Graduate School Teknika Utara Pogung

DESCRIPTION:

In today public discourse, freedom is often regarded as a result of a long and modern intellectual achievement. It is regarded as part of the success story of man freeing himself from authorities that held him in captivity. The human rights movement, democratic society and an open liberal economic are seen as means which uphold freedom. How can Islam and Christianity meaningfully relate to this public discourse in society? Where can they join forces with secular movements, where do they bring a distinct perspective that challenges and deepens society s understanding of freedom and responsibility? Where are they themselves challenged by society? Does freedom need responsibility to be sustainable and responsibility freedom to be meaningful?
